I hate being sick

I have had a cold now for three weeks.  I cannot shake this cough and it is driving me nuts.  I'm taking extra vitamin C, and now some herbal stuff.  No appointments available with my doctor in the next two weeks.  What a pain.  I have tried not running and I have tried running.  No difference.

I have loved the new All That Remains cd.  All the song are loud and aggressive.  I ordered the Big 4 DVD of Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth.  I'm looking forward to all of it - except maybe Slayer... never was a big fan.  I do love Megadeth and Metallica.  I was a huge Anthrax fan in high school, but lost interest when the rap era got started.  I did buy the re-make album with Jon Bush singing.

Life after the marathon

I really loved the marathon.  That is not to say that it was easy  - it was the hardest thing I ever did, but I came with a great sense of accomplishment.  Since then, I have wanted to get back to running and my legs are good to go, but my lungs are not.  Stupid cold.  I have gone out every other day and feel good, but running does cause my cough to flair up.  I keep looking at upcoming races and I think I will sign up for something just to give me something to look forward to.  The interesting thing is that all these races seem so anti-climatic.  Oh well...

On the music scene.  I LOVE the new ATR and got to see part of their show in Denver.  Had to leave early to pick up my wife and also because of my cold.  Need to find another show to go to soon.  I do have Guster tickets, which will be a great date night show.

I RAN A MARATHON!!!

That was the hardest thing I ever have done, but I loved it.  I owe it all to Tiffany for running with me the entire race, keeping me at the right pace and being my ultimate motivator.  If it wasn't for her, I'm not sure that I could have run the whole way or finished under 5 hours.  It meant so much to me to achieve both of those goals.

Chicago was such an amazing race to run in.  There were so many runners at the start of the race, it took us 20 minutes just to get to the starting line after the race began.  The altitude definitely helped me, as I never felt winded or had a cramp.  The number of runners was insane.  It never thinned out, there was always a crowd.  The same was true of the spectators.  So much energy from the crowd that lined the race.  Cheerleaders, drummers, random signs all helped pass the time.

I felt great through mile 17 - good pace and great attitude.  As we turned south and heat increased, it got a lot harder.  My wife told me I looked pretty rough at 21.5 in China Town.  The time I felt the worst was between 22 and 23.  Everything started to improve when we turned back north and you could see downtown Chicago.   At that point it was only a 5K to go and you could see the end was ahead.  Around mile 25 I got my second wind.  Kiss "Lick it Up" was blaring from the speakers and the crowd was loud.  I started singing and knew I was going to make it.  As we rounded the corner to cross the bridge I waved to the crowd and got ready to push through the final 1/2 mile.  Then the hit you with the only "hill" at mile 26... My "kick" was spent just getting over the bridge, but the pay off was to turn that corner and see the finish line!  Four hours, thirty-nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds after starting, it was all done.

It was so amazing to cross that line.  I was so tired and so thrilled all at the same time.  We walked through the finishing coral and then all the way back to the charity village.  I think we walked another 1/2 mile before we finally got to sit down!  Once we were able to sit, I felt so much better.  In the end, my right foot was sore and my left shin was sore, but my hydration and food intake was great and my recovery took no more than a day.

I have already run two short runs and then today I ran for a relay team at the Denver Marathon.  I ran the 6.2 mile third leg and it felt great!  I was so happy to be out there again and be involved with a marathon (even if I didn't run much of it) again.
